I ended up watching it quite accidentally on my own with no fandom input and I thought the point of it was that it was high-octane ridiculous drama about these versions of Holmes and Watson with little about the cases being important, and thus enjoyed season 1 and 2 for those reasons.

Then I went into online fan spaces and found out that people were viewing it as like good TV and was more than a little boggled, because it really wasn't lol. But then I got bored during season 3 because I don't think the writers new what they were doing and peaced out and only heard about the mess of season 4.

I'm glad it never etched a permanent place in my fandom heart otherwise I would have been very disappointed by it all.

I felt the same way, my sister was into it and showed it to me and I thought it a perfectly serviceable TV show but nothing to write home about. I logged into tumblr and kept seeing these posts talking about how groundbreaking and unique it was and I realized that none of these people had watched a single detective show before it. Never bothered with season 2 or beyond

Honestly I feel that about so many things tumblr has dubbed as 'groundbreaking' lol, like some things that got popular on that site have been legit good! But so many people talk about them like they've never watched TV ever, it's such a strange phenomenon of trying to make something already fun or good look better than it is, which was always so silly to me.

Never mind the numerous cases of tumblr fandoms trying to make their silly-time-fun TV show out to be An Intellectual Masterpiece That Has Never Been Done Before, and even when I liked some of them it was like: chill, just talk about how it's fun, not changing the world or what have you.

You're right. It drew a much larger mainstream audience than might normally show up for a detective show or a mystery show, and everything seemed brilliant and original to them. I watched it because I'm a fan of ACD's short stories and the Grenada adaptation and thought well, it's not a bad start and the two leads have good chemistry but I sure hope the stories get better... NOPE.

Hello fellow traveler! This was me as well. I actually enjoyed seasons 1 and 2 because Cumberbatch and Freeman gelled well together but yeah, it was never a case of writing good mysteries. I got one episode into season 4 and went "oh noooo" out loud when they iced Mary. That as when I peaced out lol. It was good urban adventure tv if that's a genre?

Yeah their chemistry was really good, I won't say a bad thing about that and that's why I got it being tumblr popular at the time since the driving force of the show was how they bounced off one another and the character's relationship. But the 'mystery' aspect was so bare-bones and non-existent that I thought that was deliberate and not something that even the creators didn't realise was missing, lol.

Ah see I got to ep 2 in season 3 and realised I wasn't having fun so I stopped watching and honestly never really felt any way about it, I had a friend sum-up season 4 for me and I kept having to ask 'wait, what really??' the entire time because none of it made any sense, and that's saying something since the show kind of did whatever it wanted anyway.

Yeah fandom unpopular opinion: I liked Mary and thought she was fun, but hey.

My experience is similar.
