Adaption requires at least some attempt at faithfulness to something from the original, whether that is characterization, setting, or whatever. Just slapping the same names on characters who have no similarity to the original at all does not make an adaption.

When you say “no similarity at all” in the context of Sherlock, it seems like you mean primarily in terms of personality. Is that fair to say?

For me, I guess the show doesn’t reach that threshold of “adaptation in name only” just because of the amount of structural similarity and clear intentional references. Even if I don’t much recognize ACD’s Holmes or Watson in those characters.

Sorry… more thoughts.

I think if you changed all the characters’ names (and their flat number), it would still have enough similarities that people would absolutely side-eye attempts to release it without explicitly acknowledging the Holmes inspiration.

Like filing the serial numbers off a piece of fanfiction, but still ending up with something that can’t really be said to stand on its own.

Like...House?

(Which is a great show.)

Yes, I think that if House had used different names, it could absolutely have been sold as its own thing.

But Sherlock, with its consulting detective and military veteran doctor sharing a flat… not so much.
