I went to high school in a rust belt city. In the early 90s the population in those cities was still mostly blue collar except in maybe certain neighborhoods. The high school class of 94 was one of the last with guaranteed degree remuneration but less than half of my class went to college straight from high school. A lot of us did go eventually but mostly we went to work at steel mills, shipyards, industrial laundries, grocery stores, or joined the military. And a lot of us were doing that all through high school. Milwaukee, Duluth, Cleveland, Detroit, Pittsburgh, they were all pretty much the same.
