AWESOME.

[identity profile] potatofiend.livejournal.com 2009-11-16 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
HA HA HA

I think I love you. :)

And, uh, I wrote upwards of 100 slashfics about Sassoon (/Graves, /Owen, you know the score), so you're not alone! I was very, very crazy between the ages of 15 and 20, and Sassoon was my life.

[identity profile] arcadiaego.livejournal.com 2009-11-17 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
Oh but you were fun though! And widened my tastes in fic a lot. Hello, by the way. :-P

[identity profile] parenthesised.livejournal.com 2009-11-17 10:52 am (UTC)(link)
brb - going to read all your fics now...

SHIT. I massively ship Owen/Sassoon (um...possibly historical canon? At least one-sided?) so this excites me no end. Also, the UL ♥ What better place to rifle through historical documents? I think I'm doing history wrong.

(Anonymous) 2009-11-17 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
lol i ship them too. don't worry bb.

/history major with a great war hard-on

(Anonymous) 2009-11-17 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
You're definitely not alone, anon. As a fellow Great War literature geek, I may or may not ship the hell out of everyone in those books. (But mostly it's Sassoon/Owen for me.)

[identity profile] illittorate.livejournal.com 2009-11-17 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
who ships regeneration characters?
I DO, THAT'S WHO

[identity profile] elendar.livejournal.com 2009-11-17 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
How can you not ship it? ;)

Just look at Wilfred's not so hidden crush on Sassoon.

[identity profile] ainu-laire.livejournal.com 2009-11-17 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, we're supposed to take classic literature seriously? *glances at copy of Pride and Prejudice and Literature*. Hmm. Been doing it wrong.

[identity profile] graziaplena.livejournal.com 2009-11-17 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
Yay, Regeneration secret!

I don't like the idea of shipping WHR Rivers with anybody (I think the facts of his life -- that he was always single and very shy, but was very well-respected and well-beloved by his peers, patients, and students -- make a very touching story), but there is no question that Sassoon cared very much for him. He even broke down publicly at Rivers' funeral in 1922.

If you haven't seen this article (http://www.human-nature.com/science-as-culture/whittle.html) about Rivers' life, it's a great read. This is what one biographer wrote about one of Rivers' old patients:
W. Arnold Middlebrook, of Downsway, Kirk Ella, East Yorks, called in the College Library in July 1963. He was treated for shellshock by W.H.R.R[ivers] at Craiglockhart Hospital in Sept. 1917. He visited the Library on, at least, two ocasions. Each time he asked to see the portrait of Rivers. He would stand, at the salute, and thank Rivers for all he did for him. On his last visit he was obviously in poor health and finished with the words “goodbye my friend I don’t suppose we shall ever meet again.” ...That is forty-six years after he was Rivers’s patient.
He must have been the loveliest man.

Oh man, we just finished this book two weeks ago in class. What a coincidence!

[identity profile] flax.livejournal.com 2009-11-17 01:42 am (UTC)(link)
Dude, I hated that book and I ship it. I don't think anyone can read it and not see it a little bit.

[identity profile] bethynyc.livejournal.com 2009-11-17 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
Fantastic! So nice to know I'm not alone in shipping them! And Yay Pat Barker!

[identity profile] angary.livejournal.com 2009-11-17 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
LMAOOOOO I thought I was the only one who shipped them as I was reading the book. Hell, I think I shipped pretty much everyone in Regeneration. Oh well, that'll teach me to think I'm a unique snowflake :P

[identity profile] duckgirlie.livejournal.com 2009-11-17 08:35 am (UTC)(link)
How can you not ship it?

Though my OTP for the trilogy will always be Rivers/Prior.

[identity profile] parenthesised.livejournal.com 2009-11-17 10:50 am (UTC)(link)
*snaps happily, in her messed up way*

I love how much love this secret's getting. And if I wasn't doing an MA at Cardiff, I'd be asking the OP if she was me.

[identity profile] tears-of-nienna.livejournal.com 2009-11-17 09:08 am (UTC)(link)
Ooh, I've just been told by a friend that I need to read Pat Barker's WWI books. Granted, I'm a die-hard Owen/Sassoon shipper, so I don't know if I'll want to ship Rivers with Sassoon, but it'll be an interesting read anyway! :D

[identity profile] smileforsale.livejournal.com 2009-11-17 08:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay, self, how did you make this without me noticing?

AMAZING.

[identity profile] starfoozle.livejournal.com 2009-11-17 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I....I thought I was the only one. This made me irrationally happy. :D

[identity profile] just-moony.livejournal.com 2009-11-17 10:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't blame Pat Barker (though her books are awesome!) I blame Sassoon for being awesome as well :D

(Anonymous) 2009-11-17 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Obviously, you're not alone in shipping Regeneration characters, OP. Actually, I think the Regeneration series was my first introduction to shipping. Oh, sixth form English teacher, what kind of monster have you spawned? I did see more of the Sassoon/Owen subtext than Rivers/Sassoon, but I'm planning on re-reading the series and keeping an eye out for the latter. I loved the original character, too. I think he was the first bisexual character I ever read in literature. No, wait -- he's [i]still[/i] the only bisexual character that I have ever read in published literature.

(Anonymous) 2009-11-18 09:53 am (UTC)(link)
I ship Regeneration characters!!! Only Sassoon/Owen, not Sassoon/Rivers. It freaks me out a bit because it's sort of RPS but if they're fictionalised versions of dead people maybe it's ok...

(Anonymous) 2009-11-18 09:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, OP. I think I love you. Not as much as I love Sassoon, but still...

Also, anybody who gets through The Eye in the Door *without* shipping should return their defective shipping goggles for a full refund. Pat Barker FTW.
