I know, right?? I am thrilled beyond words whenever I meet somebody else IRL as geeky as me, it doesn't even matter if we have zero fandoms in common, or we both like the same show but I ship John/Ronon and they are a die-hard Ronon/Teyla shipper, or they like Kirk and I like Picard, or whatever other very serious differences of opinions we may have. Yeah, sure, some fans seem to have INTENSE ARGUMENTS which maybe makes the arguers come off as socially unreceptive, but it's just because some of us have INTENSE OPINIONS -- and that is why we are all awesome and should therefore all get along.

Oh, geek shame.

So much of it is pointing at someone else and saying that they're crazy, which does two things. It says that the pointer is not crazy, and that they know craziness when they see it. That's why it's so performative, why people are always taking to their journals and denouncing some bit of behavior that crossed some imaginary line. Calling out behavior that's truly hurting someone else is one thing, but calling them out for being too excited or whatever is quite another.
