I know how you feel, Anon - I, with no idea what I was doing, partitioned my harddrive just so that I could play TF2.

OP hurrr.

(Anonymous) 2009-11-17 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
Doesn't that require dropping a bunch of money on buying windows? D:

I wonder if I can run it on a windows emulator or something...I have one of those.

[identity profile] leafing.livejournal.com 2009-11-17 02:39 am (UTC)(link)
Now that you mention it, the only reason I was able to pull it off was because I had a copy of Vista sitting around. I also had the advantage of Windows 7 Beta (It was freeeee :D) being around at the time.

I'm not sure if a Windows emulator would work, but it might be worth a shot. If you know or can find anyone who can give one of the temporary TF2 invites that everyone gets when they first buy it to you, that might be the best place to start so you're not dropping cash on something you might not be able to use.

PC FTW.

... yea, and I'm a design major. Man, I don't want a farking Mac... I keep my comp to PC, MP3 to Apple. It works nicely...

(also keep PC for the gaming aspect, love it).

(Anonymous) 2009-11-17 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
General pro-Mac commenter. There had to be at least, one, right? :D

There are a lot of programs for Mac... it just depends on what you want to do with your programs. A hardcore gamer friend bought a Mac, and well, when he got mad it didn't support whatever game? My honest reaction was, "Then you shouldn't have bought a Mac. It's like buying a microwave and trying to use it as a toaster. You should have done more research before buying a computer that doesn't suit your needs, even if it suits the needs of a lot of other people."

He ignored me and bitched about how it sucked at working, when honestly, he didn't take real good care of it either.

CRY MOAR for both of us, I know.

OP

Buying the mac was required for school. :(

If I had tons of money to drop, I'd buy myself a separate computer, just for gaming. It would be nice, actually. One computer just for games, another just for work.
Sadly, the only companies that make games that have both support for PC and Mac are EA and Blizzard. Pretty much any other game, you have to get a PC, or buy the special mac-only version if they even make it, which is typically only sold at the apple store, and costs significantly more than the PC version. (As far as anon is aware, there is no mac version of TF2, anyway.)

(Anonymous) 2009-11-17 04:17 am (UTC)(link)
See, I love my Mac, but the fact that it sucks for gaming drives me crazy. Other than that I love my Mac though.

(Anonymous) 2009-11-17 07:01 am (UTC)(link)
Wow, your friend is retarded. I love Macs, but even without research, isn't it kinda general knowledge that they're not gaming machines?

(Anonymous) 2009-11-17 05:38 am (UTC)(link)
There's this really neat program you can download called Crossover Games that lets you play Source games on a Mac without having to partition your hard drive. In my experience, it works really really well with TF2 - there's no lag and the game itself looks wonderful. The only issues I've had is the program crashing twice in the month I've had it and Steam being a little buggy. Other then that, it's been great.

I don't think you have to DELETE OSX. Should just be able to partition it, which is a pretty basic operation with fdsk. I'm a Linux nerd, true, but it's all the same nowadays anyway. Or if that's too scary, try virtualizing windows and just running it in memory.

Or just use Wine. This looks to be a good reference on how to install it on a Mac (http://davidbaumgold.com/tutorials/wine-mac/). It does require running some terminal commands, but those look like copy and paste jobs. And Team Fortress 2 does appear to run under Wine, along with a ton of other PC games.

(Anonymous) 2009-11-17 07:10 am (UTC)(link)
there are programs for the PC

And not for Macs? lol. Wonder how people use Macs then, hmmm...

I get PCs have their advantages for some people, but for the last I dunno, 7 years, I've never needed one specifically. You can partition like everyone said but, even if I ever needed to, I'd be scared of doing it too.

(I'm glad I don't play/want to play computer games. Luckily for you, PCs are cheaper than Macs... Dunno about gaming-ready PCs or whatever though)

[identity profile] piratecore.livejournal.com 2009-11-17 09:45 am (UTC)(link)
Dude you don't need a pc to play and you don't have to partition your hardrive or even buy windows! All you need to get is this http://www.codeweavers.com/products/cxgames/

Steam is even supported by them. It's so easy to install and takes hardly any time at all. You should download the trial and give it a shot! It's what I use, and while the Steam client is a bit glitchy sometimes, TF2 runs great! The game is SO AWESOME! I've wanted to play it for a really long time and was so happy when I came across this way to do it, so much cheaper and easier than any other way I've come across.

So yeah! Maybe give that a shot before you drop a wad of cash on a pc!

(Anonymous) 2009-11-17 10:23 am (UTC)(link)
Story time: I discovered the joy that is the TF2 fandom about a week after I bought a new computer. I then discovered said computer could not play TF2.

After disturbingly little deliberation, I sold it a few weeks later, and spent all of my $2000 savings on a quad core gaming PC. I don't even generally play PC games, and I knew I'd end up living on spaghetti for the rest of the year if I bought it, so I have no idea how I managed to justify it to myself. I guess I somehow did, though.

Yes, I know I didn't need a computer nearly that powerful to play TF2.

No, I don't regret a thing.

You should see my sweet framerates.
