Haha, out of curiosity, do you work with horses at all or just follow racing? OTTBs are common in most horse sports, though not necessarily at the top levels except maybe in eventing. But hey, Hilda Gurney, who's a big name in dressage in the U.S. retrained Keen (http://www.usdf.org/halloffame/inductees/profiles/keen.asp) who was a retrained racehorse, even!

... But you are too late, I am a die-hard dressage rider! And I find horseracing super boring to watch, actually, but I do understand how tiresome dressage can be for the uninitiated. ;) Unfortunately, the music for freestyles is a little like in figure skating — I think riders and audiences alike would enjoy more fun music, but the judges and standards are very conservative (don't get me started on the judging wank, lol, the last Olympics were so mishandled), so they penalize riders for getting too out there, and also, I believe lyrics have to be relatively limited by the rules. :( But even so, people do fun things occasionally — Steffen Peters uses Safety Dance in his current one for his main horse Ravel, and Debbie McDonald, who just retired, had one with her horse Brentina that used Aretha Franklin's Respect. :D But you're right, dressage does have a long way to go in shedding its boring/stuffy image with outsiders, and I don't think the coats and top hats help.

Equestrian sports at the Olympics tend to be pretty ... um, lame, though. It's the World Equestrian Games you want to check out — more events and more important in some ways! Here, this video made the rounds back in the day even on non-horse sites and had people frothing about it, if you haven't seen it and it doesn't get you at least bopping along with it IDK what to tell you. :(
