'not enough people'

That depends on your point of view, doesn't it.

There are two major differences between the USA and the rest of the developed world in this respect; firstly, that contraception and abortion aren't free and easily accessible in the USA, and secondly that the US has a vast religious movement trying to convince women that they're nothing more than walking uteruses. If the only people in the US who had kids were those who were planning and wanting kids, the birth rate here would be similar to that in Europe, most likely.

[identity profile] ginzai.livejournal.com 2009-11-18 02:55 am (UTC)(link)
I had a long reply all typed up, but arguing with people over the internet doesn't really appeal to me tonight. Suffice to say, I disagree with much of what you said and find your supposition of a vast religious conspiracy that wants to reduce women to nothing more than walking uteruses to be frankly offensive. Also, I'm not sure why you seem to think that the "rest of the developed world" offers abortions free of charge and without restriction. Just take a look at Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abortion_law#Western); there are plenty of restrictions on abortion even in Western Europe. The US has a fairly relaxed set of laws in comparison to some European countries.

I'm not going to argue that with greater access to birth control, decent sex ed, and abortions, the birth rate here in the States would drop, but I think you're oversimplifying things considerably with your claims.

But, as mentioned, I don't much feel like arguing online tonight, so I'll be stopping my responses here.

I've lived in both Europe and the USA and the difference in terms of pressure/expectations to have children is immense.

(Anonymous) 2009-11-18 03:32 am (UTC)(link)
Have you lived all over Europe? In every single country?

[identity profile] ainu-laire.livejournal.com 2009-11-18 03:44 am (UTC)(link)
Not to mention that, depending on where you live in the US, there are major differences between regions. I do not think you can paint Europe nor the US in one color in this issue; their regions are simply too varied, and even people within regions are rather varied in their opinions.

If you subtract the large Hispanic population, the birth rate in the US is almost identical to that of Western Europe, and falling.

In fact, the US has a much lower birth rate than France, and UK is very close (and rising). No discussion on cultural differences need occur because studies have shown time and time again that the number of children one has is largely tied to economics. The present recession will cause a dearth of births in 2010; mini-booms are easily observable in the robust dot.com and housing-based economies. It's not completely that simple (the astonishingly low birth rates of Japan and Germany are strongly tied to patriarchal practices) but that's the root of it.

(Anonymous) 2009-11-18 11:41 am (UTC)(link)
lol just curious, how did you find that statistic re: hispanic population?

[identity profile] ariseishirou.livejournal.com 2009-11-18 11:49 am (UTC)(link)
The American government makes these statistics public (http://www.census.gov/compendia/statab/tables/09s0082.pdf).

I've lived in Germany for over 20 years, and I can't figure out what you mean by "patriarchal practices" - I don't find the culture to be much more patriarchal than the U.S. to be honest.

[identity profile] ariseishirou.livejournal.com 2009-11-18 05:45 pm (UTC)(link)
You're right, I should have specified government policies, particularly in Germany's case - though it was changed in 2007, originally there was poor support for working mothers compared to the rest of Europe. It will be interesting to see if there is an increase in birth rate thanks to more generous parental leave/tax breaks/handouts. I predict there will be.

[identity profile] ellensmithee.livejournal.com 2009-11-18 07:29 pm (UTC)(link)
OK, that's what I was thinking you meant. The child care situation in particular has always been pretty bad, and and I've suspected myself that that was what kept a lot of women from having kids. Women are only required to take the first 8 weeks after the birth off, but I know they are often put under a lot of pressure not to return to work and are sometimes ostracized if they do (which happened to a friend of mine), and that can be pretty offputting as well.

Recently, however, they've discovered that a lot of woman are waiting until after they're well-established in their careers before they start having children - there's apparently a boom under women in their late 30s/40s getting pregnant and the birth rate has gone up for the first time in years.

Presumably it's "not enough people" to have a stagnant or expanding population. You're just looking for an excuse to scream "I'M A FUCKING LIBERAL" on the internet, aren't you?

In many developed countries, including the one I'm from, immigration contributes more new population than births. So no, a low birth rate does not mean a shrinking population.
