I only like Will Ferrell in Elf. He's too offputting to be funny in anything else.

I really liked his performance in Megamind but otherwise can't really stand the types of comedy stuff he does.

I liked him when I was younger, haven't watched most of his films in a long time. But I think his manchild antics will wear down on me much quicker now.

Buddy the Elf is my favorite character he's played because he plays Buddy so wholesome!

I'm just surprised that Elf is the one exception for you. He seems pretty damn Will Ferrell-y there. (I admit, I've only seen clips.)

I only really liked him in Stranger Than Fiction, where I think it really helped that his character is supposed to be a lot more normal and calm.

I was going to suggest they watch this as it's a very different performance from him.

Not OP, but I agree he's very Will Ferrel-y in Elf but it works for the character so it's the exception for me as well. It definitely rides the line of too much though.

I was going to say that about Stranger Than Fiction too. I know everyone says it, but it's true! I went to see that in the theater with some friends, I had really low expectations because I don't particularly enjoy his type of comedy, but it was surprisingly good.

What works about him in Elf for me is that his outbursts in the movie are genuine for his character. It's not Will Ferrell hamming it up to get laughs. It's just Buddy the Elf excited about Christmas.

He was really good in Stranger Than Fiction. I got to watch it in theatres, and it was a much sweeter film than I expected. Not as weird, given the premise.

I liked him in Stranger Than Fiction, but I tend to avoid things he's the lead in because his comedy is not really my thing (no, I haven't seen Elf, and I'm okay with that). I've seen Bewitched, which I disliked, but that wasn't down to him. I think he's okay in small doses like a few SNL skits or Zoolander.

Bewitched was such a disappointment and it had very little to do with the casting.

ayrt

Yes, it was. I think most of the casting would've actually fit pretty well if they'd gone for a closer adaptation to the series (which was what I was expecting). I am okay with meta, but it's tricky to do well, and they didn't. It felt like they put in too many layers without understanding them all. And the tone ended up really strange - I didn't know when something was supposed to be funny and when it wasn't.

I don't even like him in Elf. I just don't like that movie. Yes, I know, my soul is broken.

This is a super common sentiment. But I don’t share it; I have tried multiple times to watch Eld and I just can’t. I hate every second I’ve seen.

I can tolerate him a little in the Lego movie though; he’s hardly on screen and his voice is perfect for the animated character he plays.

the Lego movie is exactly right for him, maybe why his appearance in Barbie was pretty much the same character.

(Anonymous) 2025-12-14 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, same. I can't get on board with it.

(Anonymous) 2025-12-14 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
I don't mind his comedies from that era, but I have a big grudge against "Elf" for the way it squandered Peter Dinklage the way it did.

Even in Elf he's always struck me as... kinda creepy at best. The older I get, the less funny I find these types of manchild characters. His are supposed to be innocent, but I see too many non-innocent, non-comedic versions IRL and it's pretty depressing so I don't find it funny anymore.

"I see too many non-innocent, non-comedic versions IRL and it's pretty depressing so I don't find it funny anymore."

Oh, I agree. Sometimes it hits a little too close to home, or feels a little too authentic vs feeling exaggerated. When you see men who really are like that and have made their immaturity and inability/unwillingness to be an adult other peoples' problems, the character stops being funny.
