I think the story now is that it was first original fiction that she made into a Steve/Bucky AU fanfic in order to post it online. And then she took the names back off in order to publish properly.

I can believe it and I think the back-and-forth is funny.

Did you miss the hockey obsession in fandom? I feel like for awhile there everyone was either in hockey rpf or writing hockey aus of their ships.

It was even a (niche) meme for a bit... You'd find a bit of really well-written fanfiction you liked, look up the author's other work, and be disappointed that they're only writing Ice Hockey RPF.

I started the series more or less on accident. I didn't know about the books, haven't been into Hockey/sports RPF, or "yaoi" (I think – I read a lot of m/m but am unsure about what differentiates m/m from yaoi). I just saw about three tumblr posts raving about the gay fucking and started watching on a whim, expecting slop and not to last through the first episode.

The show is genuinely GOOD. You can mock that it's based on fanfiction, mock the concept, the systemic problems with queerness in male sport, the cynicism behind creating a show like this. But the show they ended up making is good.
