Is this a hate symbol?

(Anonymous) 2025-12-13 09:31 pm (UTC)(link)
A manager at work constantly wears this same lapel pin, it is a sword and shield (the sword is point down, behind the triangular shield) with the shield being sort of enamel coating and vertically split with half blue and half white. Is this some sort of covert hate symbol, or is he just a guy with weird taste in jewellery?

(Anonymous) 2025-12-13 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)
It could be a fraternity or other school thing?

Re: Is this a hate symbol?

I think it's more likely to be a sports team logo or a fandom reference than a hate symbol.

Could be for a video game or a sports team. What makes you jump to hate symbol?

OP probably doesn't like that person and is looking for more reasons to dislike them.

ayrt - I thought maybe the guy had said some suspicious stuff or something.

That is a very weird conclusion to reach at this point.

Re: Is this a hate symbol?

I'm going to be honest, we have a few folks here who seem to almost enjoy jumping to the worst possible conclusion, so it really isn't surprising to me that someone might immediately assume that a random pin is a hate symbol that someone is proudly advertising at their work.

Re: Is this a hate symbol?

it surprises me. That's jumping to the most unlikely conclusions. How stupid do you have to be to think that there's some covert hate symbol system in the world, honestly. Schizo territory there.

Re: Is this a hate symbol?

(Anonymous) 2025-12-14 12:43 pm (UTC)(link)
And yet here you are jumping to extreme conclusions.

Re: Is this a hate symbol?

I mean, if you're attention at all to anything going on in the world, you'll notice people are being more bold and putting their hate on full display (hell, the USCG no longer considers swastikas or nooses as hate symbols), so just having that concern isn't so strange.

That said, I can't find anything with that description matching any currently known hate symbols. I would guess it's just some logo.

That's nazi and slavery apologism. Just recently US voted against anti colonialism in UN. Before that it voted against anti Nazi resolution. I know for a fact that most americans don't know about this and wouldn't care if they knew, same as they don't care about US killing people all over the World via proxi wars, economic sanctions and hunger, Nestle praying on african kids, etc.

it's just odd to me that their first thought was hate symbol. not an emblem of a fraternity, club, society, fandom, a family thing, or just a random pin they like the look of. no, they think it's a hate symbol.

Chronically online and/or enjoying drama.

Re: Is this a hate symbol?

Sounds a lot like either fraternity or lodge. And upside down sword and triangle could be a Knights of Pythias thing. Maybe a sports team or even a family coat of arms.
Hate symbol is very unlikely.

Ask him! If it's a fandom or a family history or SCA thing, he'll be happy to talk about it. There's so many things I would think of before a hate symbol.

Honestly most people who wear non standard stuff like this love to be asked about it ime, no matter what it is

Yeah, I was gonna say, this is peak chronically online.

"Chat, what's this symbol on this guy standing next to me? /doesn't ask the guy standing next to them"

Yeah, I have a particular piece of fandom-related jewelry that I wear all the time because 1) it's pretty, and 2) the fandom means a lot to me. I'm happy to explain what it is if someone asks me about it!

Re: Is this a hate symbol?

(Anonymous) 2025-12-14 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
I'm asking about it 👀 🥺 I'm just nosy!

I don't wear them all the time, but I have a cactuar necklace and an Elpis flower necklace, both from Final Fantasy (XIV in the case of the flower), I simply adore cactuars and I think the Elpis flower is really pretty, even though I'm not that big of a fan of Final Fantasy.

That sounds like the Tennessee Titans logo.

"Hate symbol" is a bad faith conclusion to have. My first thought it might be video game or DnD related.
You can always ask, and if he skirts the subject, you can guess from there.

Re: Is this a hate symbol?

let me google that for you...

nope, all I get is a thousand generic sword and shield logos, not fandom related but also not obviously noted as being a symbol of anything. ANYTHING. The Tennessee Titans logo is blue with a sword but no shield and no white.

I'd guess school thing, sports thing, fraternity thing, or christian thing before I would guess any other meanings. Ironically, not even Pokemon Shield and Sword has that kind of logo so the likelihood of it being fandom is pretty small. You want answers? Snap a pic and do a reverse image search. Or fuckin ask him if you're prepared for the answer to be the symbol of his weird church promise for abstinence or something.
