Re: Why are people always surprised that stores are busy/things are sold out in December?

NGL I miss when the stores weren’t constantly sold out of things. It’s been the norm for almost six years and this year we reached the point where most stores had most things in stock. Until this month. The supply chain just isn’t keeping up with demand. It’s driving the high prices even higher and it’s honestly no surprise that shoppers are in a foul mood when they’re in stores. Especially when most stores only run 10-20% of their registers. I’m not defending bad behavior and anyone who’s shitty to the employees needs to fuck right off. But being generally disgruntled is not only understandable, I think it’s a given at this point.

Short answer: because it didn’t used to be like this and there’s no reason for it to be like this for years after the pandemic.

That's the thing that gets me, people are trying to say its normal and yeah it was normal for a few hot ticket items to sell out but not everything. This is by far the worst I've ever seen it but it has been bad for years now but it didn't use to be this way. And it doesn't have to be this way, which is the really frustrating part.

The tariffs are an issue right now.

The tariffs are less of an issue for brick and mortars than online shops. And they have nothing to do with retailers choosing to perpetually understaff their stores.

The tariffs are definitely an issue for brick and mortars in the US. A great deal of merchandise is imported.

Yeah, I work retail and we've been having issues with our supply due to the tariffs. Believe me, we don't want to be sold out of stuff, but it literally isn't within our control.

Fred "Slacktivist" Clark works at a big box store that's implied to be Home Depot, and he noted in one column that they bought far less stuff this year (they order Christmas stuff in the springtime apparently), and the tariffs were definitely a factor.

The column (which is mostly about what Christmas music is best to hear if you have to hear it all day at work): https://www.patheos.com/blogs/slacktivist/2025/12/01/rules-and-notes-for-a-christmas-playlist-revisited/
