this is genuinely goddamn exhausting and sometimes makes me not want to interact with anyone anywhere. people skim and then respond to something that wasn't ever said.

Yep. They skim through it and misinterpret. They respond before reading the entire comment. They jump to conclusions and respond to what they THINK was meant. They argue about semantics or typos.

They twist words, they're deliberately looking to troll, they respond to one line instead of the comment as a whole, they extrapolate your comment WAY beyond what you said, they take obvious hyperbolic comments and generalizations seriously, they get mad about something related and reply to you arguing about something that you never even mentioned

I've had that happen and I'm just gonna chalk it up to people being too used to Tumblr style discourse where if you reply neutrally like you would elsewhere, they read it as unfriendly because the average tone is emotional+positive comparatively.

I've had this happen too! On Reddit, several times. I have learned to always start off my comments straight up saying "I agree" before I start adding on, so that people don't get the wrong idea. I agree with you that people are used to being argued with and nitpicked at, so they are more defensive when they read replies.
