So many of the reviews and comments on GoodReads are just useless. I wish there was somewhere to discuss books and read peoples' thoughtful reviews, with less of the social media fluff.

I agree there's not a good discussion place on Goodreads, but I usually find multi-paragraph reviews saying what the reader did or didn't like for any book I read. I find reviews there pretty useful. Amazon reviews, OTOH, they'll just tell you that they liked it or not without saying why.

Ugh, I could go on a rant about GoodReads. The main things that frustrate me are:

1. People rating a book that isn't out AT ALL yet - I'm not talking about people leaving reviews for books they have early access copies of, but books the author hasn't even finished writing yet. So irritating.

2. When a popular user with a lot of followers/friends leaves a review that sometimes says literally nothing, but it gets a ton of likes, and rises up to the top of the reviews. Sometimes I'll see one that says "4 stars, review to come" and it's 4+ years old and at the top of the review list. Clearly, that review ain't coming. But all of their followers hit like on it, and it goes to the top.

Of course neither of these are a huge deal, but it's just a little irritating to see these useless nonreviews.

People leaving a review for a book that's not out yet annoys me SO MUCH.

Especially when it's clearly either to boost or tank someone for personal reasons (or because a bunch of people got marching orders to either review bomb a "bad" person or elevate a "good" person).

Not saying those are bot comments, but they read like bot comments to me.

They really do.

It used to be better

It has fallen down the "influencer" trash chute. I used to go to the reviews when I was thinking about checking out a new author/book but now it's just social media garbage words. People are all trying to sound clever and get likes and I just want you to tell me what you liked or disliked about a book.

There are a few places on GR that still has good genuine reviews without people trying to get followers, but it is getting rarer by the day.

I don't buy books there, but I use Amazon for book summaries and reviews, because you can get so many, varied readers, and the summaries actually give me an idea of what the book is about, unlike Goodreads.

I don't visit Goodreads much and the few times I have, it's been pretty much useless for me. As much as I dislike Amazon, I get better mileage out of the reviews there (and find it easier to sort through junk/bot/paid reviews) than almost anywhere else.

there are better discussions in the groups on goodreads - they are like bookclubs and forums:

https://www.goodreads.com/group/

your mileage may vary depending on the group though
