I wish there was a filter on Ao3 to not show anything from fandoms that aren't produced in English. I'm just not interested in anything coming out of Asia, whether it be K-Pop or Anime or Bollywood, and there's so damn much of it.

(Anonymous) 2025-12-30 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
...why Asia specifically?

I'd understand if you just don't want non-English-language canons. But the three examples you listed are so completley different from each other, with the only connecting thread being a very large and incredibly culturally diverse continent.

Seriously. If this isn't bait, I'd love to hear any kind of explanation for this that isn't just flagrant racism.

Those are three categories of fandom that can swamp your search results on AO3 when looking for a particular tag. Or at least two of them are. I don’t run into much Bollywood stuff, but I guess it would vary by what you’re looking into.

I’d love to be able to exclude all bands and all cartoons (and all video games), but K-pop and anime definitely make up the bulk of it.

AYRT.

It's the inclusion of Bollywood that's throwing me. I run into a lot of anime and K-pop when trawling random tags, and if the OP had just mentioned them as specific examples of non-English megafandoms I'd understand their frustration... but I'm pretty sure I've never stumbled across Bollywood at all, much less excessively enough for it to be a problem.

I run into anime and oddly enough Harry Potter still swamps the results often enough. And One Direction. Must be the tags I'm looking under.

(Anonymous) 2025-12-30 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
nayrt and yeah, I'm so baffled by that one. I don't think I've EVER seen a Bollywood tag in the wild.

(Anonymous) 2025-12-30 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
Are you reading random things fandom blind or something?

(Anonymous) 2025-12-30 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
I can only imagine you're reading for a specific trope and not like characters or ships you're into, and honestly at that point you're in the wild west of tags to the point that I'm not sure what you'd expect? Like of course if I'm not curating for fandom I'm going to get a bunch of fandoms I either don't know or am not interested in? That's the only sensible result I'd expect.

Wild West of tags?

I don't understand how you are using ao3

(Anonymous) 2025-12-30 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
Are you just searching by tag for any random fic/fandom that pops up? Which, fair. I've definitely done that once in awhile but I've never had a problem with Asian media flooding the results. It's also just so random. Like I get now wanting certain fandoms that pop up all the time in your results, but just all of Asia?

Excellent secret nonny.

+1, where are they getting all these Bollywood results? Cdramas, anime, Kdramas and Kpop, okay, but I don't think I've ever run into a Bollywood fic unless I was specifically looking.

I agree with the OP.

Asian media fandoms are just really popular, so if I'm looking by tag (say...angst, or a specific kink) there's a lot of things I'm totally unfamiliar with.

And the answer to that is not to get into some fandom I'm not interested in because there are dubs or whatever, because wtf? I don't like RPF for any country's pop, including my own. I don't like any kind of animated material for fandom activity, and I don't like C-dramas, etc. Those things are a lot of Asian material.

(I had this same filtering issue when bandom and One Direction were super-popular; I'm not just a Kpop hater lol.)

That said, I never really see Bollywood stuff on AO3, so ???? on that one.

What? Who is saying this?

Someone said if there's an English translation they're game to take on the canon. I will never like anime, though; I mean, I don't like animation in my own language. I don't like soapy dramas in my own language.

Did Secret OP achieve their secret goal in making FS members feel confused and uncomfortable with not just the secret but the thread too?

Because I am confused and uncomfortable.

(Anonymous) 2025-12-30 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
I’m not OP, but I could have made this secret minus the Bollywood part.

I suspect it is a secret in the first place because they thought people might not like it.

(Anonymous) 2025-12-30 06:06 am (UTC)(link)
What a strange thing to complain about. I get why this is a secret.

(Anonymous) 2025-12-30 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
1. Why Asian media specifically? Plenty of them are subtitled or have dubs. I'm unfortunately monolingual, but if something at least has an English translation, I'm game.

2. This is making me wonder if my AO3 habits are the odd one out. I only read fic for fandoms I'm familiar with, or (very rarely) if I can vouch for the author and it's AU enough to be canon blind. I don't like KPOP or most anime either, but I don't have this problem at all because I'm... Not in those sections. Do most people read fic for series they're unfamiliar with?

(Anonymous) 2025-12-30 02:20 am (UTC)(link)
Nope, I use AO3 the same way. I’m looking for fandoms I like, not just random fandoms that use certain tags. There are a handful of authors I follow, but if they switch fandoms, I don’t feel obligated to read those fics.

This secret makes me wonder HOW the OP uses AO3, and why they do it that way.

Same on both counts. I don't rule out "Asian media" because I like some JRPGs and read RPF for laughs/morbid curiosity. But unless I forget to filter out crossovers, I don't have this problem of being drowned in anime or k-pop.

I also didn't think Bollywood was ubiquitous enough to be mentioned, ever.

(Anonymous) 2025-12-30 03:07 am (UTC)(link)
I do sometimes read fic for fandoms I only have a passing familiarity with (if nothing about the canon actively puts me off and the summary is interesting), and that usually happens when I go looking for a particular trope and just click on a tag (like Accidental Baby Acquisition, Found Family, or Alternate Universe - Dragons). And, depending on the tag, you can get results that are heavier in certain sorts of fandoms versus others.

Well.

(Anonymous) 2025-12-30 03:21 am (UTC)(link)
It takes a little more work, but if you use the Exclude function and then Sort and Filter, you can at least decrease it some. In the Sort and Filter bar, under Exclude, expand Fandoms, mark the boxes of any fandoms you don't want, click on the Sort and Filter button, then repeat until that list under Fandoms only has fandoms you want. Now, there will still be fandoms you won't want in those results because that Exclude Fandoms list will only include the ten fandoms with the most fic (that you haven't excluded) in whatever category or tag you're searching in, but the instances will be drastically reduced.

(Anonymous) 2025-12-30 05:46 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, well, AO3's search system and tag system is designed to maximise results not restrict them.
