You're just doing fiction. If you don't have even a passing familiarity with the characters or the world, it's just fiction. No fan about it.

Reading random fanfic based on tags or recs or "an author I love wrote it so I'm gonna give it a go" is how I've found some of my favorite fandoms. Sometimes fandom happens in reverse.

This is how I got into Dragon Age. Started devouring fic just based on one author I followed posting one fic, then got so interested I played the games, and then bought the tie in novels and was all in.
