I don't think of fanfiction as a genre in and of itself. It's a descriptor for works that really can be of any genre, and the main thing that separates it from other written works is the fact that it's motivated by fan expression. Take out the fan expression aspect, and it's regular old fiction.

+1 When you don't know the characters or the setting before starting, it's no different than reading a regular novel, and the better fanfic it is, the less you'll understand the references and characters. The more you understand it reading fandom blind, the worse it is as fanfiction.
