Oh, 100%. And a poor judge of character. And he was one of my faves back in the day.

OH man, agreed. Sure he's cute, and I like fluffy but wild animals too. But I wouldn't try to make one of them a pet.

You're not wrong! I like him and think he's a good character, but he is definitely a grade A dingdong.

Yeah, he probably shouldn't have been solely responsible for any of the kids at any time. Not Harry in Diagon Alley, not during the detention in the Forbidden Forest (so many, many things were wrong with that scenario it boggles the mind), not for Care of Magical Creatures classes. But given what was allowed to go on in the wizarding world, maybe not a single one of the magical adults had enough sense to be responsible for children.

Yeah, the Forbidden Forest detention is really wild. It would have been a lot for even 7th years (especially considering the fact that half of them were sent off with just the dog, who then panicked and ran away), but 11 and 12 year old kids?? Bonkers.

And you're right, apparently being magic means that you lose a lot of common sense and responsibility when it comes to children.

I always read his character as being educationally, if not also mentally, a little slower than average. He had a good heart but failed to look past what he wanted (dangerous creatures, his teaching methods, etc), which often resulted in repercussions that had never crossed his mind. I know adults who are like that in real life, but I always understood it to be because of his lack of education and poor upbringing.

Yes, I loved Hagrid but so often I'd be frustrated with how he navigated the world. He's one of those comical doofus with a heart of gold characters. I was glad that he survived in the series.
