I love the Star Wars sequels. But I still think it would have been more interesting to explore a New Republic destroying itself from within or some
upstart pro-Empire group starting a new war with the good guys now the government.

I am not a huge fan of the Star Wars sequels, but I agree - a wobbly/failing New Republic in the background with an Imperial resurgence in the foreground would have been much more interesting than Death Star Mark III. Considering the main characters, you wouldn't even have to do the prequel-style political stuff, that can be fully background and handled by Leia.
