[The Wheel of Time]

ahahah i thought the same thing. and then felt bad. and then kept reading :D

[identity profile] agilebrit.livejournal.com 2009-11-21 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
This is three times as hilarious to me as it should be, especially since I'm only tangentially familiar with the series and have only picked it up because I've met Brandon ([livejournal.com profile] mistborn) on several occasions at cons.

[identity profile] atom-bunny.livejournal.com 2009-11-21 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
This gives me hope for when I eventually get around to reading it.

But I haven't read books 10 and 11 yet... I started book 10 and gave up because I was just so bored with it.

[identity profile] drandomtuba.livejournal.com 2009-11-21 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes... Book 10 is one of those things you just have to plow through.

11 is worth it, though, definitely!

Oh dear gods, I hear you. CoT is pretty much made of fail...I suggest looking up some of the drinking games on the web. It's what I'll be doing when I reread it eventually. If you don't/can't drink, make up some wacky action or yell "Blood and bloody ashes!" when the same. phrase. appears. AGAIN. or just take heart in knowing the rest of us are rolling our eyes right along with you.

KoD, however, is quite enjoyable. Things happen. It doesn't fullymake up for the slog that is CoT, but it helps. And tGS...well, it inspired me to go back and reread the whole thing, CoT included, so I'd say that makes the slog worth it in the end.

[identity profile] angathol.livejournal.com 2009-11-21 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I bought the first two books years ago and spent nearly every summer for about three years attempting to read them, but would eventually give up. Someone needs to convince me they're worth it.

[identity profile] drandomtuba.livejournal.com 2009-11-21 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Did you finish the first one? It took me almost a month to plow through it. But if the ending of the first one didn't get you into a frenzy to read The Great Hunt, well... then they're probably not worth it for you.

The thing you have to keep in mind is that throughout the long descriptions of clothing, scenery, and mannerisms, is that RJ was creating an entire world, with a complete history, and peoples with their own traditions. Unlike with some long fantasy series, there are very few things that pop up in later books that feel like a random last-minute additions... which means that in the first book, he had a TON of "boring" ground to lay so that the later books would hold weight.

(Anonymous) 2009-11-21 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Fuck these epic fantasy writers that don't know how to properly pace or end their books. There should be contracts that stipulate that if you don't finish your series by date x, the publisher will hire another author to fucking do it for you.

I'm looking at you, GRRM.

LOL

Love Robert Jordan, but it is so true.

(Anonymous) 2009-11-21 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Is this book worth reading if I used to real WoT, or do I need to read all the books before it?

[identity profile] juice817.livejournal.com 2009-11-21 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
OMGYES. I actually wrote a post about it when I finished and said that Jordan was the horse-drawn carriage and Sanderson a souped up Corvette. Things are actually happening now. And I love it.

[identity profile] ms-cucumber.livejournal.com 2009-11-22 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
When I heard that it wasn't going to be one final book, but *three* final books, I said to myself: this series is never going to end. Your comment gives me hope.

BTW, the secret should have a SPOILER tag.

[identity profile] drandomtuba.livejournal.com 2009-11-22 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
Really?

It doesn't specify anything at all, and there are a whole bunch of different ways to interpret the "cough cough" part of the secret.

I'd go into details about why this isn't a spoiler, but I can't do that without actually mentioning a spoiler, so... I won't!

That's how I felt when I was reading Knife of Dreams. It seemed to be dragging on forever and no one really seemed to feel any urgency about the final battle, and there were so many separate story lines that I was about ready to give up, to be honest. I was still just interested enough to want to see it through but not too excited. Then I met Sanderson at DragonCon and listened to him talk about it, and he got me excited again. And then, reading this first of the last three, I felt that excitement validated. He's pulling all the threads together much more rapidly than Jordan seemed to want to, and there is finally a sense of urgency among the characters about what's happening around them. I'm actually excited about the next book, like I haven't been about WoT since probably Fires of Heaven.

Sorry, that got a little tl;dr. Heh. ANYWAY. Sanderson seems confident that he'll finish with book 14. I think he has things pretty much outlined clear through, and is writing 13 now.

There are spoilers in this reply

[identity profile] drandomtuba.livejournal.com 2009-11-21 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
(in case you didn't read the title, there are spoilers in here)

EXACTLY! And it was still so poignant, really SHOWING how truly mad Mazema was; it actually gave me a bit of the sniffles.

Or when he DIDN'T show the scene with Egwene going back to the tower to get the book! I read that and thought, "Oh good Lord, that's an entire chapter of uselessness he cut right there!" It could have been handled with a little more finesse-- to me it read like someone passing in a paper the next day and suddenly realizing he forgot one supporting detail so he inserts a coupla sentences in at random-- but it was't necessary for us to read it; of course she'd get the books back!

Love Robert Jordan's work, (obviously if I stuck with it this long!), but the man couldn't cut anything out, couldn't end anything!
I finished the book and realized that it probably would have ended up being five or SIX more books. Yes, some richness of detail was left out (aka: descriptions of women's cleavage and clothing, and paragraphs of scenery, and discussions of how people's SMELL changed), and some sentences got a little repetitive (too many he said... he did, he looked, all in a row) but I'm happy!

So glad it turned out that Lews Therin was really just the madness, it made me want to reread the books for the tenth time, and look for every clue and hint supporting this. (-:

I didn't feel like Lews Therin was "just the madness," though. He knew things that Rand had know business knowing, for one thing, and Rand IS Lews Therin reborn... the prophecies say so.

My feeling at the end was that Rand finally integrated LT into his real personality to such an extent that he didn't need the voice in his head anymore... that he came to realize that Lews Therin is NOT a separate person, but HIMSELF as he lived in a different age.

[personal profile] herongale 2009-11-21 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
This book was just so full of amazing and win. Egwene, a character I previously vaguely disliked, truly comes into her own. Rand is epic in a million different ways. Mat... creates elaborate backstories and makes me lol forever. THERE IS NO ELAYNE. I... I... it was just SO GOOD.

OP, I can kind of identify with your guilt, but hey. Remember, the plot is still totally Robert Jordan's own. Everything that is good in this book is there because Robert Jordan came up with a detailed plot and kept meticulous notes. Sanderson's restraint in going balls out with the arms crossing, braid tugging, clothing descriptions, and baths is admirable, and I don't think there's anything wrong with being glad that he's picking up the series with a bit more attention to pacing. XD

[identity profile] drandomtuba.livejournal.com 2009-11-21 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
YAY FOR FELLOW ELAYNE HATE! I want her to die SO badly!

Oh man, that whole "Women are goats..." discussion from Mat was so amazingly funny that I made my parents read it!

[identity profile] metalsyko.livejournal.com 2009-11-22 01:44 am (UTC)(link)
WAIT

HOLD THE PHONE

THERE'S NO ELAYNE IN THIS BOOK?

FUCK WAITING FOR CHRISTMAS I'M BUYING THIS SHIT YESTERDAY.

Slightly spoily.

[identity profile] alenxa.livejournal.com 2009-11-22 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
To be fair, the previous book had picked up the pace considerably from what it was before. Not that it's hard to be better paced than CoT, but things actually happened, which was hard to come by consistently in the preceding few volumes.

There's also precedent for the placement and expediency of that particular bit of action, if you recall Omerna and Niall in the prologue for CoS. And the prologue has long been the standard place for one-shot POV segments. It could have been Jordan's decision as easily as Sanderson's, for my money.

But yes, I did have similar thoughts. And then I realized that would just mean Sanderson was the right person for the job, and felt infinitely better.
meredith44: Can't talk, I'm reading (Evilest evil by sinecure)

[personal profile] meredith44 2009-11-22 04:46 am (UTC)(link)
I'm actually happy to hear that the pacing had picked up. I read the first novel fairly soon after it came out, and I kept up with the series until the 10th book. (I think it was that one.) When reading it, all I could think was that the first 2/3 of the book could have been like 2-3 chapters. I haven't read in the series (or even really thought about it) since. With this secret, though, I just went to my library's website and requested a copy. Thanks for giving me back my interest in the series! (Although, I, like you, feel like I may be desecrating Robert Jordan's grave in thinking these thoughts.)
