I'm completely neutral on byler, I can get why people ship it and if it were to happen I'd be happy for those who are into it. But I do not for one second think that this will be the case, because outside of Will's one-sided feelings there is nothing there to suggest anything will happen between them in that way.

I also wish there weren't any romances in this show because I think almost all of them are fucking terrible(I half enjoy Lucas/Max but I think that's the actors doing the heavy lifting), I also just don't jive with 15 year olds finding true love forever.

(I'm writing this before the finale airs, if byler does happen feel free to clown on me in the comments, I really won't mind).

Reading this before watching the finale but yeah, like... I just can't summon up any feelings on the byler vs mileven thing except for bafflement at the people who thought byler would be canon based on what we saw on screen-- or, in some cases, based on WILDLY out of pocket theorizing and assigning completely unrelated things some secret meaning.

There are theories I do think are plausible. There are ships I do assume are endgame (whether or not I care about those ships is irrelevant, this is not based on what I would write fanfic about it is based on media literacy and having watched a lot of shows do romances and knowing what it looks like when they do). I certainly have sympathy, who hasn't been a gay kid with a crush on a straight best friend? But like... I don't see it! And I think Will could do better! And even then I don't care about any of the fanfic. My two favorite Stranger Things ships both include one adult who has been killed off so my investment in any romances going canon or not going canon is LOW.

(I am glad Robin got her girl though)

What does Bylar stand for?

Will Byers / Mike Wheeler

Sidenote, the ship name for Mike and Lucas is apparently Wheelclair, which I think is hilarious.

Ohhh. I could not remember their last names and was wracking my brain for how Will and Mike became Byler.

Wheelclair is hilarious and makes me want to support that ship.

(Anonymous) 2026-01-11 09:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, it did not. And many jimmies were rustled.

(Anonymous) 2026-01-11 09:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Byler was never gonna happen, and hopefully some of the hardcore shippers learn a lesson from this about needing a ship to be canon.

That said, I didn't mind the romances? I mostly found them relatable (and I genuinely love Hopper and Joyce as a couple). And while dating isn't as much a part of adolescent life now (at least in some places), it certainly was in the '80s. If none of the characters had had crushes or romantic relationships, then it wouldn't have been true to the time.

(Anonymous) 2026-01-11 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Shippers haven't learned that lesson for decades, why start now

(Anonymous) 2026-01-11 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
AYRT

They're all different groups of shippers, though. Lots of shippers have learned, it's just that new people take their place all the time.

(Anonymous) 2026-01-11 09:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeaaaaah, it didn't happen and some portions of the shipper-base have been... less than chill about it, lol. Which sure be disappointed, but the claims of queerbait or acting like they were strung along is so wild because outside of Will's one-sided crush there wasn't anything resembling bait there, the show was always very clear about Will's feelings being unreciprocated and it was something he needed to move on from, which he does! And I liked that tbh.

Plus in fanon people can do what they want, let them fall in love after college after they've both had a bit of space from Hawkins.

(Anonymous) 2026-01-11 10:06 pm (UTC)(link)
They clearly don't know what queerbait is. Will is canonically gay! He had a big coming out scene! His future involves flirting with a man at a bar (might even be a guy he's dating)! Queerbait isn't "a gay male character didn't wind up with the person I wanted him to;" it's "these characters were coded and teased as gay in order to appeal to and string along certain viewers, but were actually straight the whole time."

Some people do not in fact enjoy shipping and seem to only want canon status so they can be right, I for one have never understood that. Like it's fun when things I shipped went canon(a few stinkers here and there on that front), but I was not shipping them for that reason only because otherwise I might as well not be there???

It's a bizarre kind of behaviour that I used to mainly see in het fandoms and has now crossed over into both m/m and f/f and I hate it.

Huh? I've seen this in slash spaces for a couple of decades now.

I guess I’ve been lucky in my m/m picks that, until about early 2010’s, I didn’t see this kind of behaviour, just everyone knowing and agreeing that our slash ship du jour wasn’t going to be canon. While now it feels like every canon slash ship has this as the main vocal contingent of fans and it’s honestly been sucking the fun out of shipping.

Yeah, I can't bring myself to care about all the romance on the show. I don't get any sense of chemistry between anyone, and even if it worked I can't take grade school romance seriously. You know damn well that chances are it won't last, and I wish the show wouldn't lean on it so much.

Even at the high school level, I don't give a shit about the love triangle between Steve, Nancy and Jonathan. It takes up way too much time, the drama is tedious and again, very little chemistry.

(Anonymous) 2026-01-12 09:18 am (UTC)(link)
Funnily enough, the actors who play Jonathan and Nancy are a RL couple.

(Anonymous) 2026-01-12 12:33 pm (UTC)(link)
How dare they, with their "lack of chemistry!" They should break up.

(Anonymous) 2026-01-12 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
I only watched S1 and S2 and the teen romances were the absolute worst part of it, especially Mike and Eleven. I'm glad to hear the show didn't end up with everyone paired up for life, it's just so unnecessary and dull.

(Anonymous) 2026-01-12 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
I agree completely.

(Anonymous) 2026-01-12 12:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't understand what it is with FS and completely hating couples on TV. It's bizarre.

(Anonymous) 2026-01-12 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
Byler didn't happen as you probably now know.

(Anonymous) 2026-01-12 01:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Some people just have really bad media literacy. Like, even though Mike and Eleven had a lack of chemistry and their romance wasn't really written very well, it was still clear in the writing that it was the canon romance for those characters.

Also, so right on the romances. None of them were written well, and really Lucas/Max got by on strength of the actors and being a secondary focus to the writers. Jonathan/Nancy should have broken up in Season 2. Joyce/Hopper always felt to me like "well these two are the only main characters their age so of course they have to pair up".

(Anonymous) 2026-01-12 03:40 pm (UTC)(link)
The irony of course is that those who were convinced it was going to happen are the ones screaming about media literacy while they demonstrated 100% how the had none.

I have no skin in this game but I had a fun evening scrolling through the show tag and reading the meltdowns of fans who had somehow bated themselves.
