I loved this show as a kid. Rewatching it a few years ago, I just felt really, really bad for Lois to the point I couldn't enjoy it anymore. Her family really treated her terribly, for all they pretended they loved her.

I felt that way as a kid. I liked a lot of the show but whenever it came to Louis stuff I'd get so stressed and feel so bad for her. It wasn't funny to me at all. The rest of the show? Funny. That stuff? Not.

I'll have to rewatch the show! As a kid, I was prepared not to like Lois but I found her quite fair in a lot of the punishments or lectures she doled out to Hal and her kids because they really did so much dumb shit. As I entered young adulthood, I understood and identified with some of Francis's complaints and resentment, but I grew to love Lois and wish I had a mom who could have been more attentive with her kids.
The last time I was binging the show I was in my 30s, and I simply grew to respect and love Lois more. Were there times Lois was too aggressive or controlling? Yeah, but her crimes are nowhere on the level as the boys or Hal!
I also recognize the crazy making parents whose influence are more prominent than a scarred offspring wants to admit to and see. At least Lois realized it and tried to apologize to Francis and Reese. She's always been a favorite character.

But I definitely will have to rewatch the series to see if I gain new insight on Lois's family life.

Lois' own upbringing is gradually revealed to have been chaotic, unstable, and desperately poor, so a lot about her behaviors makes sense once you realize that she literally does not know what a "normal" family life looks like. She is actually doing a lot better than her own parents despite being extremely flawed at times, and her main goal is that her kids get a better chance than she did and don't fuck themselves over permanently
