I kinda miss those goofy little skits fanficcers used to put at the start and end of each fic where they interacted with the characters from the fic. They were fun. Proof that we took ourselves a lot less seriously than the current po-faced lot do.

well that's just like, your opinion, man. mine is, those were always cringe and still are.

Embrace the cringe

I always hated those.

No opinion on skits themselves, some funny, some cringe, all skippable.

"proof that those people took themselves way less seriously" though is lol. Lots of those people seriously believed those "muses" lived in their heads and insisted the characters drove their writing and they as the writer had no control over them, so what they did, didn't, could, couldn't write was not their fault, while everyone else looked at each other uncomfortably

Yep, I remember those days very well. It was weird even to a fandom newbie like me.

I hated those LOL

I love that you liked them. I hated them and found them cringey but I was always like "why do they do this? who even wants this?" so I'm genuinely happy to learn that some people actually enjoyed it.

I think Chinese BL still does these. At least, they were in The Reader and Protagonist Definitely Have to Be in True Love.

I stumbled upon an ancient Geocities or Tripod shrine where the webmaster "talked" to the characters and it was legit so funny. I never see that anymore.

Ohhhh! I had forgotten that that was ever a thing! I kind of miss it, too! Sometimes they were more cringey than it was worth, but some of them I honestly enjoyed. That was a different time for sure.

In my youth, the majority of fics I read were RPF so these sorts of things were uncommon for me to come across. I'm sorry but I don't like that and I skim over author's notes if they do a bit of banter between author and fic characters. And I know it's like the pot calling the kettle black given I was into RPF XD

This prompt made me smile because I loved doing that.
