Old Business: White elephant gifts

(Anonymous) 2026-01-24 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)
There was a thread two weeks ago in the General Comments about words and possible misunderstandings (contempt vs. resentment) and I'm the anon who brought up white elephant gifts:

https://fandomsecrets.dreamwidth.org/3339140.html?thread=1150942340#cmt1150942340

I didn't get a chance to respond further that night, particularly to the person who cited WIkipedia and said that the definition supported the other person's definition. Not exactly. I'm not sure I explained it well enough.

My point was that a white elephant gift is supposed to be something funny, useless, etc. like a gag gift. Whether or not you swap/steal it is a separate issue. The term "white elephant" applies to the nature of the gift itself, not what is done with it.

The person I was referring to believed that a white elephant meant a regular, non-gag gift and that the white elephant part referred specifically to the swapping/stealing. So basically, in a white elephant exchange, they were expecting to get... I don't know, a cute coffee mug and a Starbucks gift certificate or something like that, and then the "white elephant" part is getting it stolen by someone else. That's why they were upset at receiving what they thought of as a useless joke present.

The Wikipedia entry defines white elephant gifts as "amusing and impractical gifts", which is how I understood it. It was interesting to hear what everyone else's experiences were and the terms they were familiar with, so thank you everyone!

I always understood White Elephant the way you did, and a "Yankee Swap" was the type where you were guaranteed to swamp gifts. But I've found out that most people don't seem to know Yankee Swap and that White Elephant has basically taken its place. It annoys me.

I know it is good they found a new home but I'm so sad. They'll never see their siblings again. :(
