I had the same realization while back. Grown adults were interviewing this TEENAGER, and asking her inappropriate questions and slut-shaming her.

I had a similar realization about Monica Lewinsky, too. Women (and girls) just get dragged through the media in such a disgusting way. I'm glad that it's gotten better, although it still happens way too often.

Yeah, it's pretty gross. I used to make jokes about Lewinsky when I was young and dumb and hadn't unpacked my own internalized misogyny. She's such a badass, rising above all of that and maintaining her sense of humor and sense of self.

SO MUCH OBSESSION over whether or not she was a virgin. All the teen pop idols of the day got questons like that*, but yeah, it was especially bad with Britney. One minute the emdia was sexualizing her all over the place and then they turned right around and shamed her for the very thing they were doing to her.

But no, see, she had to be a "role model" for impressionable teenage girls! God forbid those girls' actual parents take on that responsibility, no, we needed to demand this young pop starlet who was already trying to navigate a stressful, clearly exploitative business take on that kind of responsibility for her fans. And if she "fails" in that responsibility it's clearly her fault, of course, the exploitative media never has to take any responsibility for all they did to her, nope.

*Christina Aguilera got shamed all over the place for her sexual imagery early on, too. I remember all the controversy over her "Dirrty" video. Even as a teenager back in the day, I thought the outrage and pearl clutching was stupid.

And yeah, there's been a lot of reexamination of everything with Lewinsky over the years, too, and rightly so. She's handled the fallout of all of that far better than I would've if I were her, that's for sure.

nayrt

And hilariously, that was the only "dirty" song on the album! The rest were pretty mild or nonsexual (aside from a FWB song, which didn't come off risqué to me at all).

Don't forget Brooke Shields (from my young teens) who was in a movie "Pretty Baby" where she played an underage prostitute at the age of thirteen years.

(Maybe she was thirteen when the movie came out? Anyway.)

Famously, a reporter asked her what she liked in bed and she had no idea how to answer.

Now, though, I wonder just what her mother was thinking (and I am pretty sure Brooke has made some comments about that herself).

Oh, her mother was a real piece of work, as a lot of celebrity kids' parents are.

I think she was 12, but yeah, still... big yikes. It's wild what the adults in her life allowed.
