There are in fact, other options somewhere between "add an awkward baby storyline that no-one wants" and "force a woman to quit her job completely".

this.

I hate babies, they're never a good idea imo, but I've seen a lot of shows just adjust clothing/use objects to hide an actors pregnancy. Being fired/quitting is not a reasonable option at all.

It's been a while since I've seen it in action, but I'm quite fond of the "character has multiple giant purses for a season" one.

I always remember The Nanny specifically having some really funny gags when CC's actress got pregnant, with her holding a variety of items constantly in front of her stomach including at one point a giant prop sign that said 'BABY.'

That time CC mocked TV for how poorly they hid when an actress was pregnant, while holding a voluminous houseplant in front of her (obviously pregnant) belly during the whole scene.

I love the Nanny.

agreed. the giant coats hide a multitude of pregnancies, especially if the filming can be adjusted so that the season is done before the actor is really showing and is about to take time off. having them offscreen for an episode or two also works great.

At this point, CGI has gotten cheap enough that pretty much any show that isn't a live sitcom can erase the bump.

Keri Russell got pregnant during The Americans, and they used several traditional bump-hiding techniques (including the Big Coat), but ultimately they said that every single episode that season had at least one instance of CGI smoothing out her stomach.

Jayzus, this.

Like on Its Always Sunny in Philadelphia, where they used the pregnancy for some jokes and bits and then it was resolved by Dee having secretly agreed to be a surrogate for a previously appearing character, so the baby immediately leaves the screen and is never heard of again

I'm a big fan of 'character is only seen wearing enormous sweaters and sitting at desks this season', but you can also have a character travel and only really be part of things over the phone!

Have the actress's character be sent to fat camp, because she's a porker. That was a choice... Frasier made.

Oh yeah, that was awful. And before that, telling stick-thin Daphne to stop eating cookies because she'd get fat! I guess that was their way of foreshadowing.

It wasn't until about a decade ago I found out that Aunt Viv's pregnancy on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air was only written in because the actress IRL got pregnant.
And as an adult, I can see how clear that was given how awkward the baby/little Nicky was written into the show.
