See, that’s just one version of what “relatability” means. I think plenty of people don’t use it to mean that there’s any specific similarity the share with a character, but that the character is understandable at some level and they can relate to their thoughts or feelings.

For me that isn’t relating to a character that’s understanding them, which for me is not the same thing at all? And like I adore the characters I love but I don’t relate to them one bit, I’m s8moly watching their journey and having fun while doing so.

Same. I've always used (and seen "relating" used) to mean relating to a character on a personal level/having some sort of personal connection with them. There are plenty of characters that I can understand but not relate to at all - for example, I can't relate to a character who wants to be a parent because I don't have any desire to ever have children, but I can certainly understand that desire even though it isn't one I personally experience.
