same here - and I also agree with OP in general. I think I first saw the whole idea of relating to the character pop up in fandom RP, where some people really needed to "relate" and not just connect with the character they RP, which sadly leads to a lot of self-inserting and projecting. I'm not surprised if this has spread to fandom in general, since it also underlies a lot of self-indulgent OOC comfort fic, AU building, and weird fanon takes, for both better and worse.

connecting means you get it, you understand, while relating seems to mean, this character is me and I am this character (not literally but over time it may warp into literally).
