Tired of seasonal and holiday capitalistic bullshit

(Anonymous) 2026-02-03 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
I'm tired of every holiday getting stretched into a bigger and bigger thing just as an excuse to sell shit. BACK IN MY DAY, ST PATRICKS DAY WAS A TINY HOLIDAY that no one really "celebrated." My parents put green food coloring in our scrambled eggs that morning, and you wore green so you wouldn't get pinched.

Now all the stores have a rack of cheap disposable plastic shit to buy. Social media has trends of dumb shit. Same for like, 4th of July. That was fireworks, grilling hot dogs and hamburgers. Now there's more shit being merchandised for the holiday.

And the bigger holidays just get more and more inflated. Christmas is the most obvious example, but Halloween too. There were always Halloween decorations, but it gets expanded more and more each year. It comes out earlier and earlier. And Easter.. That was another thing, when I was a kid, you bought candy, a basket (that you reused each year), the plastic Easter grass, and plastic Easter eggs (which were also reused yearly).

Now it's candy AND a whole bunch of toys and cheap plastic shit in the basket too. Plus decorations, of course. Oh and better get a new basket every year! Your kid can't use the same Easter basket for two years in a row?! Valentine's Day has crept up too, buy buy buy all this pink and red shit.

I'm just tired of it, damn, I'm tired of capitalism and ads everywhere.

Same. We don't really buy anything other than food and other necessities anymore. I've almost got the house completely ad free; just need to get rid of the ads in apps and we'll be good to go.

I don’t really see ads so I guess maybe that’s why I’m not so fatigued. As someone who loves decorating for holidays, I was ecstatic about fifteen years ago when decorations for holidays other than Christmas started getting a lot more elaborate and numerous. I buy a little bit more each year. But I skip over the cheap plastic shit and instead focus on creative decorating so that even if I have the same stuff as others, it doesn’t seem like it. I’d love to say I decorate so neighborhood kids enjoy it but really they only like the cheap plastic shit. If I bought 20 inflatables for Christmas I’d be the most popular neighbor. I own zero inflatables because they’re ugly and overpriced and fragile and require me to interact with them frequently. I have a homemade sleigh with 8 reindeer made out of plywood, instead. I put a mannequin in a Santa suit in it. My Halloween decorations are extremely popular but only with adults. A homemade demon (using a Walmart costume) and scary fence and a bunch of graves. The graves are the same mass produced ones everyone else has but I present them as a graveyard with dead flowers in a grave vase, skeleton arms reaching up from the ground, a ghost floating up from another.

Sorry. I have Big Feelings about this. I actually agree with you but also think there’s room for people like me who enjoy doing creative things with holiday decorations.

Yeah, my whole neighborhood is really into decorating for Halloween and honestly I love it because it's just fun to walk around and see all of the decorations that people put up. My neighbor down the street is super hardcore about pumpkin carving and always does a setup of probably 20 different pumpkins all over his lawn every year. It just makes the whole neighborhood feel festive when so many people do their own displays.

I'm tired of Valentine's Day because if they were at all honest they'd call it You're A Big Fucking Loser If You're Not in a Couple Day.

I find it might be easier on one's self to think of it as Cheap Chocolate Eve.

DA It *was* easier but now the chocolate is barely even discounted! Same for Easter!

Or the Supernatural term: Unattached Drifter Christmas (in other words, if you breeze into town on that day and hit a bar, you might be getting lucky.)

I wouldn’t worry too much. I don’t know anyone who celebrates Valentine’s Day. I’ve been married 20 years in May and we’ve never once celebrated, nor do any of the couples I know. I really think it’s just a holiday that new couples care about, people who have only been together for a few months. The rest of us just buy the candy for ourselves the day after.

I dislike it, but I'm used to it. I work in retail and we have a "seasonal" section that rotates basically every month. These commercialized holidays are manufactured, but the days blurred together, I don't notice anymore...

I enjoy seeing things on clearance after the big day, though. I've gotten Christmas candy and a cute plush for less than 50 cents. Hopefully the remaining cute Valentine's Day stuff will be 75% off on the 15th... I'm looking forward to that one passing, because I've been single for a few years now. Sigh.

I used to get excited for Halloween shopping when there was the odd thing to buy - but now like you said its over done and mostly pretty wasteful. I use to like getting the cute stickers, clothes and maybe seasonal kitchenware, but not only is the stuff usually badly made or uninteresting - but by the time the actual holiday is about to arrive, they start clearing it out and start prepping for the next holiday after.

I love having my Easter basket out and a few decorative bunny things, but it's a wire one my mom bought me years ago and I have all sorts of ceramic and stone eggs in it (but I put candy on top). Same fake grass as 15 years ago, too.

We don't really decorate for anything else except a cute felt banner over the fireplace and lamps and a metal wreath on Halloween for the porch, and the Xmas stuff.

Same stuff every year. No plastic crap.
