When people say "I wouldn't have expected *you* to be reading that" or "I judge people who read [thing I read]", I never know quite what to say.

I mean, we all contain multitudes, right? I have to have diversity on my plate of food to avoid physical malnourishment, I have to have diversity on my shelf of books to avoid mental malnourishment.

Sorry, I guess?

Anyone who judges people for reading something should be shunned. I hope their pillow is always lumpy, their socks are always damp, and they continually get their clothes caught on handles.

"Why?" seems like a good starting point

I just say OK and change the subject. They’re opening a door to a rant that nine times out of ten is totally unhinged. I don’t walk through that door.

My mother is so weird like this.

Not so much at me, since she already knows my “low-brow” tastes. But she’ll be so surprised and half-ironically scandalized to discover that her friends like certain things.

I try to gently push back on it, but sometimes I just roll my eyes.

I've been a bookworm all my life, so having a wide range of books just makes sense to me. If I only stuck to one genre or one type, I'd be a lot more stretched for reading material and why do that to myself? There's so much out there, might as well sample from the buffet.

I totally get you. Some people are so weird about that like. I'm not allowed to like multiple things? Or like things that are...really different from one another?

Usually I say something like "I know, right? But it's so good!" and just own it.

"A lion doesn't concern himself with the opinions of the sheep."

Although, seriously, life has taught me curiosity is better than judgment. Being judgmental over others' interests is immature.

I talked once with a colleague. And she was telling how her child only later started reading and only reads some "shit" like fantasy and sci-fi and never classics. She tried insisting on some classics.

Wooow, I wonder why her child didn't like to read /s
