It bugs me that people in fiction don't poop. Sometimes they pee, but not poop.

I just assume, like a lot of the minutia in life that is needed for a person to actually function, that happens off-page/off-screen. Otherwise, there are so many starving, dehydrated, sleep-deprived, constipated, unhygienic characters driving around in vehicles that somehow don't need much gas, only showing up to school/work very sporadically.

A lot of writers often don't include much of it if it isn't interesting to them or if it doesn't add any value to the narrative. But I assure you, you can find works where pooping is interesting to the writer, if you go looking.

I can offer you a few significant pooping scenes from mainstream non-comedy fiction: Breaking Bad, Trainspotting, and Pulp Fiction.

Speaking only of Trainspotting here, um. "Significant", yeah, I suppose that's not inaccurate LMAO but secret-anon please be careful if you decide to dive into that movie or book lol

People used to joke about the shits the main character of 24 must take during the commercial breaks.

life was better before we were told that wizards shit themselves and then just magic it away.

(Anonymous) 2026-02-08 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
That never made sense to me. If you can magic it away, why not magic it away while it's still inside your body, and avoid any annoying odors or temporary wet spots on clothing?

God I wish I was living in your world.

I'm coprophobic so I don't mind. I just see it as an unspoken thing everyone does in-universe.
