welcome to fandom

This is a secret related to your secret: I assume they act like that because think white knighting will help them get a Gay Best Friend.

I dunno, people get attached to their faves and that's pretty normal for fandom. People who judge cis women in particular for being attached to characters that happen to be gay and male are usually the ones acting like they're speaking for some imaginary mass of offended gay men

Not just cis women. But I'm also playing spot my ship and I am devastated to only recognize a couple of the characters, none of them mine. Oh! The humanity!

I am sometimes genuinely surprised by how indignant and adamant cis women people can get about the characterization of fictional gay men people. FIFY

This.

"Other people are characterizing my blorbo wrong" can strike in any gender+sexuality combination.

I took it not as OP saying other genders and sexualities don't do that about all characters, but that this particular situation is odd them, such as the debates about whether top and bottom preferences are "realistic" and so on. You're right though that people in fandom generally debate character issues.

It's so weird that you need to single out "cis" women here.
