I am, and always have been, very interested in reading current crime news. I have a particular interest in missing persons cases.

I am not a true crime fan. True crime fans scare the fuck out of me on a very deep level and if I’m honest, they annoy me on the surface level. I get annoyed at the ones who get ~Chris Watts vibes~ off every husband. I get annoyed at the ones who think everyone in the world is a white, middle class millennial woman stay at home mom and thinks hardship is only getting some of the super expensive toys they want. They all lack empathy and even the basic awareness that they’re talking about real people.

But the ones who go beyond that and spread bullshit, make accusations, submit FOI requests, and generally turn into stalker psychos are the worst. And it seems like with every new mediocre true crime podcast that comes out, those fans multiply.

To me, true crime isn’t a fandom. It’s an interest. That’s a big distinction. And it’s so depressing to me that I am in the minority of people with that interest.
