No worries, the only times I've seen a coat check is outside the ticket booth. Tickets usually state you won't be allowed back in on discretion/upon leaving. I personally have never checked a bag/coat, but be it a sales tactic/safety measure I'm pretty sure they could charge you again if you claim your bag even if it's just to take a drink?
I've seen it in the fine print type of thing, I'm not sure they'll hold you to it. (aka depending on the museum/staff they could happily let you re-enter the museum after grabbing a drink as much as they could try and recharge you for both... aka I've mostly been to museums in america so i really have no clue)

But I've also been to museums that have a "does your bag fit" type of deal. They barely even checked what was inside. So I guess it mostly depends on what security they have... And if you have people throwing soup and superglueing themselves to priceless pieces of art, then even a sip of water can look suspicious.
