Real, on Twitter there's a refreshing variety of opinions on characterization and plot (and more of my own views mirrored), but that also comes with tribalism and toxic fans treating discussions like a battle for dominance.

Not to mention platforms full of mostly younger users, where the finer aspects of characterization are actively pushed to the side or flattened in favor of which ship looks cute, or at the worst, is more morally pure.

I've found that engaging directly with canon, and posting in my own spaces in smaller sites, is much more chill. Personally, I am partial to Mastodon, though I have been posting more here as well.

It does feel more boring at first, but the engagement I do get tends to be more thoughtful. I try to give myself a time limit on certain sites, and only allow myself to do so if I've done something other than consuming.

Specifically, it's usually sites with a higher character limit, and/or a userbase that skews older, that are more chill. Less potential for talking past one another, and more life experience generally means less outrage over trivial things. This is especially true of fandoms for children's media/a mixed audience.

My main fandom's side of Pinterest, lacking both of these things, and being for children's media, is a place where fandom etiquette goes to die a gruesome, Final Destination-style death. I really need to follow my own advice and stop spending so much time there.

Oh wow, I had NEVER thought of a fandom having a presence on Pinterest! This is not a negative or disparaging remark btw, just surprise because it's something I'd never considered. But, of course, why not? Pinterest is kind of a unique place so I can see how it happens. That's cool! Although, not cool that fandom etiquette dies there in your fandom.
