It happens frequently in multiple countries where both driving and alcohol are common, and it's not particularly funny.

Yeah, that's a weird comment. Sadly, drinking and driving is not just an American thing. And regardless of that, it's definitely not an "lol" situation.

It's depressing how true this is. A few years ago, 4 teenage boys who had just graduated from high school were driving on a 30 mph speed limit road. It's also a short road, the distance from stop sign to stoplight is less than a quarter of a mile. They were driving responsibly. The road has a slight curve, and some drunk asshole came through, swerved into their lane and killed all 4 of them. He survived with no injuries. I drive past their memorial sometimes and it still makes me so sad and angry.

To be fair, Australia has cracked down on it really hard in the last 20 years. I live in a very rural area with no public transport and people frequently lose their license for 18 months or more for a first offense. There's still drunk drivers, but it's nowhere near as common as when I was a teenager (five people of my graduating class of 71 people died in car accidents within a year of finishing high school, four of them were drunk.)
