People stuck in dysfunctional family dynamics often try to make sure that nobody escapes from a shitty situation. If someone attempts it, the shaming and "but faaaaamily!" campaign begins. My family doesn't wish me harm, exactly. But they don't want to rock the boat, and if I stand up and identify out loud who's being an asshole and what they did, that's rocking the boat big time.
