I feel you. I've been The Writer in some very small/mostly-dead fandoms. I still prefer my small fandoms to big ones where you can get passed over just because of sheer volume, but it's only fun if there's someone else you can TALK to.

I've gotten hyperfixated on something that has a relatively small fandom. I mostly write smut fics, and there are a single digit number of explicit fics written for this fandom on AO3... and I've written all but one of them. I'm grateful for the interaction I do get, but I miss writing for larger fandoms where I could expect more comments and kudos. People say write for yourself, but I can't deny I love the dopamine of external validation. I also worry that because I've written most of the tag I'm doing something wrong. Like should I not be writing smut of these characters? Are people annoyed by my presence here? I wish more people would write smut for this fandom because I want to read it and I wouldn't feel as alone on the explicit tag.

Sounds to me like you're giving treats to a small fandom, OP. The only people who might be annoyed are random haters who don't matter. Chances are, the people leaving kudos/comments are happy, and may be inspired to write their own in the future. You never know. ;)

I understand wanting someone else to write smut of your ship, though. I'm in that position with my current fandom, right down to having the minority preference regarding who tops and who bottoms. I'm the only one regularly writing my ship this way, and if anyone doesn't like it, they can read something else or kiss my ass.

As the sole writer both smut and gen for a very small pairing within a megafandom, you have to really manage your expectations. I do still have well-admired fics in the larger fandom space, but I know I'm one tiny grain of sand in a desert, people have so many fics to bookmark and read I know they may never even get to me. In the tiny pairing? I'm all they've got and the comments reflect it. I love "omg I didn't know I needed this" more than the 100th "nice fic thanks good job." Don't expect megafandom numbers and cherish every thoughtful comment and kudos! Your audience loves you for being there for them when they can't! It's literally a case of apples to oranges, love your oranges and don't compare them to your apples.
