Childhood dreams

[personal profile] iff_and_xor 2026-02-26 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Inspired by secret #1, is there anything that you specifically dreamed about doing as a child and you actually got to experience eventually? How was it? Did it live up to your expectations or imagination?

Or... Is there anything that child-you dreamed of and you haven't done yet, but you're still hoping or planning on doing someday?

There are so many dreams that will never happen, but one that I dreamed about but thought would never happen was traveling out of the country. It took 42 years, but I did it! I went to Pompeii last year. It was a double wammy of two childhood dreams achieved at once (travel and walking the streets of Pompeii). It was amazing. I went by myself and spent a whole day just wandering and basking in the ancient history.

no, but, honestly? it's for the best.

child me wanted to be a park ranger. I'm 50 now, I know how bad that would have gone if I'd actually followed through, assuming I was somehow still locked into that career.

child me didn't have huge dreams. All of the things I've done, or researched enough to know I didn't want to do, are things I made happen within 5-10 years of thinking it up. Child!Me in 1983 could not even conceive of all the cool things to do out there, like visit Japan, road trip for metal concerts (shit, I didn't even consider I could literally Go To A Concert until the first one I did in 1991), volunteer with organizations that give me the same education as if I had paid for it at college, buy a house, start a business, etc etc etc.

Going to a fan convention. Went to several as an adult and was mostly pretty fun.

I don’t want to go into specifics but throughout my 40s I revisited all of my childhood dreams and made a bunch of them happen. Others I discarded and some I’m still working on or towards. It was very freeing because the only reason I’d ever abandoned any of them was because my parents drilled it into me that the things I wanted weren’t the right things. It felt like reclaiming myself when I just decided one day that I’m gonna do this and this and that and that, too! It also helped me through the grief process when the abusive parent died.

When I was a child, I wanted to be a doctor.

When I was in college, I wanted to be a teacher.

Nowadays? I put bare minimal effort into a bullshit job at undisclosed location that I only care so much about.

I'm pretty grateful for this tbh. It's low stress this way and I can even say "fuck" to my boss's face, so I'm not complaining.

If I were a doctor or a teacher at my current level of stress tolerance, I would be dead by now.

I was going to be a downer for a bit and then unlocked a memory. As a young teen I wanted to celebrate my birthday at a summer house (summer houses are absolutely a common things here so it's nothing fancy). I was told no and that I should wait for my 18th Birthday. So. As an adult
1. I hate this place and rarely visit 2. Don't have any connection with my childhood friends. 3. Really hate overnight birthdays, especially outside the city. I ditched my friend's birthday like three years in a row because she insists to doing.
so yeah, not happening

As a kid, I wanted to experience what felt like luxury in a hotel where you are served room service like I saw in movies and tv shows. A few years ago, I stayed at a nice hotel in Chicago that did room service! They brought trays with the silver covers to keep food warm. The food was so good!

I also took myself out to NYC and enjoyed time with myself. Never thought I could make that dream come true.

Like most kids, I dreamed of going to Disneyland or Disneyworld one day. Never happened. Now, I think I could afford a trip but I just don't know if I'd like it and if I would feel satisfied with the amount of money that I know I would drop to go to a theme park.
Always felt too poor growing up, and now that I can spend the money, it just seems even more expensive but with way less reasons to want to go and spend time and money.
Hate to think I'll spend majority of my time standing in long lines, worrying that I'm in a crowded place and not enough people are masked up.
