thru sling we've gotten access to sitcoms I didn't know I wanted to re-binge, including from the 70s - I knew OF Maude but never watched it when I was young, for example. most series both sitcom and drama were not made to be binged, and I can finally say I actually feel the difference. The Good Place? Bingeable, in fact it's easier to follow storylines if you binge a season at a time. Pre-2010 series? Nah we're still following the formula, so you can pop in and out at any point, it's better to only catch maybe 3-5 episodes in a row before you're out. Big openings and endings, mid-season sweeps episodes, hell even the twice-a-season sweeps (Nov and Feb with the "holiday episode" lull in between). Seasons didn't have arcs, they lurched from ratings milestone to ratings milestone.

it's not just the wholesomeness of something like the Waltons - growing up I could watch blocks of Leave it to Beaver and Lassie on Nickelodeon - it's also the stuttering of the pacing to account for bigger ratings grabs at the right time. Whether Waltons or Remington Steele or Golden Girls, there's only so much you can handle in a few hours of free time.

This is a very well written comment! You have perfectly articulated the difference for me between binge and traditional shows. The only problem for me is that I feel the same way about the binge shows as I do about traditional ones. I can’t sit and watch them and stay engaged, there is just nothing there for me unless I watch the whole damn thing in one sitting. So I don’t bother.
