(Anonymous) 2026-02-27 02:30 am (UTC)(link)There is no cheating by touching the rock that way, it isn't even against the rules. At the very least it would simply slow the spin, but that does little to affect the trajectory of the rock as a whole. Unless you spin it a lot, or have so little it loses its handle, then touching a rock like that doesn't change anything, something that doesn't even happen at that level aside from a trick shot. Oskar was just being a dick by making a scene about it.
Like when in the mixed curling rounds when the Czech stone wasn't properly activated, (by turning it upside down, so a sensor can detect if a rock is being touched, the plastic handle part, past the hogline. upon which the stone is removed from play if it had been) but they discussed it with their opponents and they let the stone stand. Again with the womens final. Sweden touched a stone in the house while sweeping. They let their opponent know what happened and the Swiss decided to leave the rock where it was, they could have removed it or repositioned it as they believed it would have landed without the tap. (and again with the Swiss men, their skip slipped and knocked into a rock, buy Mouat just asked if he was okay and left the rocks)
ALL of this could have been made into a scandal the way Oskar made his game into one, and all be called cheating. But curling is like the better hand of golf. You decide amongst players what happened and what was within the rules.
Which when the expert was asked (in Oskar and Kennedy's case) didn't actually know since the rule only states that you cannot retouch the handle, which honestly just made the whole thing worse and caused problems for other curlers. As both Homan's and Lammie's rocks were discarded the next day despite only grazing the plastic in their release. Only for them to take the ruling back that same day because it was bullshit.
I'm mad at Kennedy for not shaking hands because that is just something you do in curling. You can hate your opponent with all your heart but you shake their hand and wish them a good game because respect is a cornerstone of the sport.
I can go all day about this.
