Kinda inspired by 6

(Anonymous) 2026-03-02 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Any fandoms you're embarrassed about having been part of?

Could be because the person/creator turned out to be an asshole or because of the general behavior of the fans etc etc

Not a fandom exactly

But getting into the soulbond crowd. I've thought about making a secret about this actually. I don't really have many cringe blunder years moments but that was a big one. I've never told anyone about it. So thankful all of those forums and sites are dead and gone and the evidence of my foolishness with it.

Probably Roosterteeth? But mostly just being a fan of Ryan. :/

I don't identify as a Swiftie because some of them are just too intense. I'm simply an enjoyer of the music/person.

I also go out of my way to avoid the Star Wars fandom. I watch everything, just don't engage with the fandom at all, because it's beyond exhausting.

Re: Kinda inspired by 6

Yeah, I'm pretty much the same. IDK if the reason I don't ID as a Swiftie is because some of them are too intense, or because I feel like I'm too old for that specific type of fandom allegiance, or if those are just two different ways of saying the same thing. But at the same time, I freely acknowledge that I am a big enough fan to be a Swiftie, even if I choose not to use the term Swiftie about myself.

I don't buy merch or put up posters, I almost never argue with people online about her, I don't stream her songs or videos on repeat in order to "support my fave," and looking at pictures of her wedding is not going to make me emotional.

But I know most of her songs by heart, I root for her to succeed as an artist, I keep up with the news about her, and I occasionally comment on the Taylor Swift reddit sub. There's no question that I'm a fan. It's just that calling myself a Swiftie makes me feel like I'm claiming a heightened level of devoted, parasocial adoration that I don't have, and that I feel uncomfortable being identified with.

Same here! Except, I have bought a little bit of merch haha. But I love the music, I generally like her, I somewhat keep up with what's going on with her, I am also generally rooting for her. However, I don't get mad if someone else dislikes her, I don't think she's flawless, I don't love every single song she has ever released, I'm not going to stream her music or buy variants just to try to help her chart position. There are some fans out there who genuinely treat her like a god, and that just makes me kind of uncomfortable. And of course it's not just her, I mean, I have seen very small-scale YouTubers with like 5,000 subscribers who have a little handful of devoted, loyal fans who think the sun shines out of their ass. It's just WEIRD.

Naruto? Not for any real reason, though I do find its sequel embarrassing. It was my first real big fandom and I was a dumb kid about it mostly.

I'm not really all that embarrassed about it, I guess, but my God the furry fandom circa the 90s-early 2Ks was dysfunctional. (Probably still is.)

I'm not embarrassed to have been a diehard Johnlock shipper for years, but when I say I was a diehard Johnlock shipper for years, I do always feel like I need to tack on some disclaimer about how I never bought into TJLC, etc. And if ever I say I had a great time in the Johnlock fandom, I feel like I need to add on something acknowledging that, yes, it did get very wanky and full of toxicity in the later years; I'm definitely not claiming it was an unproblematic fandom. But my god there was a lot of excellent fanfic, and that's really all I need in order to have a good time in a fandom.

Re: Kinda inspired by 6

(Anonymous) 2026-03-03 02:40 am (UTC)(link)
I feel you. I was mostly embarrassed by how bad an adaptation it was, I got out before the TJLC really took hold, but as a Holmesian who went in with high hopes, it's just one of those fandoms I can't look back on fondly.

Re: Kinda inspired by 6

(Anonymous) 2026-03-03 05:02 am (UTC)(link)
It's really only the fanfic and fanart I look back on fondly. I'm not a big ACD Holmes fan myself (I've read ten or fifteen of the short stories and that's about it), so I was totally fine and happy with an adaptation that took a lot of liberties and played fast and loose with the source material. But even so, I found everything after S2 utterly atrocious. And it was bad in a way that really undermined everything that initially seemed good (to me) about the first two seasons.

So I guess that's another caveat I feel the need to add when stating my longtime status as a diehard Johnlock shipper: I was really only in it for the fanon. The canon was a weird mess. XD

Buffy, but not because the show or the fandom are bad.

I just didn't write very good fic and I'm embarrassed about my amateurish output.

John Travolta.
Pulp Fiction is still one of my favorite movies but between the Scientology and the slop he has chosen to appear in I'm embarrassed to admit I used to be a big fan of his. I am especially creeped out by the Fanatic because he had a young son with autism who died in a VERY similar way to a character in that film.

Not embarrased by being in the fandom itself, though I'm very much not into Potter anymore. But being part of the obnoxious, ridiculous part of the fandom that thought there was a right and wrong way to ship and got super invested in our ships being canon, now that part I'm embarrased about.

Re: Kinda inspired by 6

(Anonymous) 2026-03-03 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe I'm misremembering, but I feel like shipping wars were almost a fandom norm for a while there (I wanna say the early-mid LJ years?). Particularly if you were in a fandom with a proliferation of rival ships.

FWIW, I used to lowkey be an anti. I didn't harass anyone, but I said plenty of anti stuff on my LJ, and I'm pretty sure the only reason I didn't leave anti comments on people's fics is because I didn't feel like it was worth the heat.

People grow and perspectives change.

Same. I regularly revisit old fandoms that I'm not really in anymore, just to see what's been going on, maybe read some new fic, and then duck back out to my primary fandom. Star Trek, Due South, The Sentinel, X-Files, etc. Not Potter. I've never gone back and I have no desire to.

I feel you. There was a lot of embarrassing behavior to go around back in the day, when the books were still coming out... I'm not embarrassed to have been into something when I was young that has since been tainted by an author's bad behavior, and I'm not embarrassed to have been a kid on the internet who sometimes behaved accordingly, but I am embarrassed about a few specific *instances*, embarrassed over my level of investment in forum politics, embarrassed because when I'm not associating hp with the *author's* bad behavior, I'm associating it with the bullies and the drama.

Hetalia. The source material, the fandom at large, my own engagement with the fandom, and the person I was at that point in time all came together into a nuclear cringe bomb. I'm a little more sympathetic to my past self for having liked it, but I still had bad taste and it was still not my finest hour as a human being.

Re: Kinda inspired by 6

(Anonymous) 2026-03-03 06:00 am (UTC)(link)
I'm embarrassed by people in fandom who are scandalized and moralistic about Hetalia's source material. The fandom itself was pretty cringe about it, but canon is so inoffensive compared to so much other stuff that mixes history and comedy. That concept just transforms into the most offensive thing ever in the minds of humans as soon as girls think the characters are cute and write slash about them.

Harry Potter, for the obvious reasons
