That sounds stressful and unpleasant. And your boss is a terrible manager. If your have a detailed outline of the work you're supposed to get done in say, a week, a month, whatever, then I'd pre-emptively e-mail him and say you're keeping him in the loop with a list of the things you got down that day/that week, referring him to said list of tasks. Keep the tone cheerful, just touching base, hope you have a great weekend, kind of thing. If you're feeling confident, ask him if there's anything he'd like to add to the list and when you've done that, e-mail him again and remind him that per his request, you've done Task X, have a great weekend, etc. etc.

But depending on how bad the job market is where you are, I'd also polish my resume and start looking, because jobs suck when the leadership is an insecure, cranky idiot who likes to make sure shit rolls downhill.
