I think the issue is that they had too much that had nothing to do with music. I think if they’d limited it to one cartoon and The Real World, they’d have been fine and music videos would still be a routine part of releasing new music. Instead they continued to call themselves MTV and instead featured a shitload of programming aimed at teens and young adults. If they’d just made a separate channel for that, it would have been better. And it isn’t like they didn’t know that; they’d been on air for all of ten years when it became common for people to bitch about how rarely they played music videos and comedians had whole routines about it. They never adjusted to align with what viewers wanted and it’s frankly amazing that MTV endured as long as it did.
