This is a really silly one

My mom used to say you had to grab the first thing off the shelf you touched/picked up, because if you put it back it would be disappointed - it finally thought it was their turn and they were the Chosen One! Cans, groceries, toys, all sorts of stuff.

Obviously not "first thing you touch" if it's not the thing you're looking for. But once you find it and pick it up, that's the one you go with.

Ha, my mom always picked out the one behind the first item because of the later expiration date/the fact that it hadn't been handled as much. I still do that. Like, I never buy the "front milk."
