Yea, I grew up with the movie and the cartoon, but never really got INTO it until the musical and I just. Can't understand why any iteration appeals to people who can't stomach problematic ships. Every newer musical fan touts them as chaos siblings or whatever, but I always got the impression that Beetlejuice and Lydia were not a couple or found family, but a (not so) secret third thing.
