"Hey, where'd your sister go?"

"Oh they ran to the store, they should be back soon."

Is but one example. To think it is only for gender unknown and NB people is a pretty modern (and chronically online person) mistake.

DA

Those anons would have a point if Novik had specifically stated she does NOT want to be referred to even neutrally as they/them, which some people do. But I haven't heard of that happening anywhere.

She has her pronouns listed as she/her on instagram. So that's what you should use. Just because a female presenting person doesn't explicitely state "don't use he/him for me" it's still rude to just use that.

They is a normal English language word. It is not solely used to gender identity. "They will be at the con doing a signing." "They are taking so long why aren't they here?" "They posted that they're running late." Are all normal phrases to use singular they that has nothing to do with gender.

nayrt but I feel like I'm going crazy because I don't make it a habit to use "they" to refer to someone whose gender is known and whose pronouns aren't they/them. It's one thing to slip up, but actively doing it? I don't understand that at all. And suggesting it's a "mistake" to refrain from using "they/them" in a case of known gender is just ridiculous.

Hollly shit this thread is insane. They is not just for gender identity. It is a normal word used singular or plural in English.

They are my child.
When my child cries, I hug them.
My child tells me their age.
If I lose my phone, my child lends me theirs.

This must be a regional thing because I have never heard anyone use they when they knew the correct pronoun.
