I'm massively late to the party (mainly because I don't watch the show) but I just learned that several of the Bridgerton cast and crew have actually been saying the real Queen Charlotte totally was black/POC and a lot of people are believing it. Like, I have no issue with racebending for a highly fictionalized AU fantasy smut show because that's whatever but maybe don't start spreading historical revisionist misinformation (and also don't get your historical info via Netflix shows and clueless showrunners/actors)?

Ugh, I just saw some clips like that and it’s so aggravating – that special frustration of having someone agree with you, but in the wrong way.

It feels like they’re playing right into the worst arguments of the hard-core anti-racebending crowd.

Yes, that's what bothers me. Like, maybe stop proving the "they're trying to replace white people/steal our culture with historical revisionist racebending" conspiracy nuts right?

Reminds me of that secret asking "why does everyone have to remind each other it's just a trash fun show?"

Meanwhile, Bridgerton cast and crew:

Still not a reason to be a cunt to people watching a show.

(Anonymous) 2026-03-14 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Whoa there. Pretty sure I didn't say "it's okay to be a cunt." Big leap in topic?

(Anonymous) 2026-03-14 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I can find one actor(maybe two) talking about it but nothing from the other cast or crew unless it's somewhere else. Like sure it's dumb but if it's one person being loudly dumb it's more eyerolly than much else.

Shonda Rhimes (showrunner I think) also said something about the "theories" iirc.

(Anonymous) 2026-03-14 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
This is a quote about it:

Queen Charlotte has a disclaimer that pertly reminds us that this “is not a history lesson … All liberties taken by the author are quite intentional.” Yet some liberties are more intentional than others. For instance: “We took the idea that Queen Charlotte was from Black Portuguese royalty and ran with it,” says Rhimes, referring to the largely debunked rumour that historical Charlotte was Black or mixed race.

From: https://www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/2023/apr/21/bridgerton-shonda-rhimes-on-race-royals-and-romps-meghan-markle-netflix

So no, she isn't saying those theories are correct, she's saying she took the idea of those theories and ran with it. Which is not the same thing.

It's not a new idea,

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2009/mar/12/race-monarchy

Not saying it isn't dumb, but the show didn't create this as a notion and I can fully imagine that whoever is saying this has come across this idea and perhaps put more stock in it than they probably should. Either way in the show it's fiction and should be treated as fiction.

Yeah, there's a couple of British monarchs who possibly had some African descent. They'd only be considered "Black" in the most American one-drop sense, though.

Lol this reminds me of when Hamilton first started to get popular, I had genuinely thought that it was a musical about forgotten POC politicians of America (my weak defense is that I'm from the UK and only know what I know about America from the movies).

To be fair I hear they really don't teach y'all about The Revolutionary War since, you know, you lost.

*blows raspberry and runs away*

DA.

This is going back several years so it might be different now, and there's probably some difference in regards to school type/county going on, but I recall that we got a bit about it, in that we learned a little about the reasons why the war happened in the first place but we didn't get many details. But I spent most of my schooling learning about our own history, medieval, Tudor, Cromwell was a Monster jfc, regency(cherry picked heavily, no idea why /s), victorian, and WW2 in various stages. There was also things like roman, greek, egyptian, norse for something different.

I think if I had taken History as my GCSE I might have done more on the revolutionary war, but because I didn't I got as far as the Napoleonic war, which I didn't retain much of. Plus if you do history as an A-Level or a uni degree you probably get more in-depth with it as well, as basic every day UK history, yeah I don't think many of us are really taught it.

Pretty much every white person you know (that isn't a product of a very monoethnic place like Denmark and no one in their family has ever left) has as much African Ancestry as Queen Charlotte.

And while we're on the subject CLEOPATRA WASN'T BLACK. *Ahem* sorry, but while we're on the topic of inaccurate Netflix shows.

(Anonymous) 2026-03-15 05:26 am (UTC)(link)
Sorta off topic, but I genuinely hate race/genderbending in media. It's somewhat okay in instances like this, (not that I follow the series, but I'll take OP's word for it) where they fantasize it to a point where people shouldn't be so stupid as to believe it to be some sort of historical documentary, or when they play straight to the point that the actors race is not part of the character nor canon.
I cannot stand it when it's done for effect or influence though. Like that just makes it all the more racist and/or sexist, possibly homo/transphobic too.
