I feel like it stank until Leia showed up. Han totally seems like the type who plays it cool but actually works hard to impress the girl (without letting her figure out he's doing that).

Perhaps. Except this is Leia we're talking about. She absolutely kept him in line. Now, after Ben became Kylo and they split, then it totally did start stinking again, at least until he lost the ship.

I feel like we're missing a scene in ANH where Han runs into the Millennium Falcon ahead of everyone else and lights a couple of sticks of incense.

ANH? Nah, he didn't care. And Luke totally complained loudly about it. In ROTJ, though? Lando was shocked when he was borrowing the Falcon for the battle at how neat and clean it looked and how great it smelled.

"Dude lights incense to cover up the stank when a pretty girl shows up at his apartment" is just a common trope. No one thinks Han cared about Luke's sensibilities.
