Personally, the last thing I want from a series/media/show is for my OTP to become canon. So I definitely see where you're coming from.
I think ultimately they wont go there because they did give the one guy a gay romance, and usually that means they heard the viewers, and thought they were placating them even though I don't doubt it made them all the more rabid.

Also watching exactly one episode, (the one where birthmark face guy went into a coma and did that whole soul search thing to get out of it) I, in my very professional opinion, doubly doubts they'll go there because there is no actual chemistry/intention between the two.

As someone who grew up and was a part of the whole rabid yaoi fangirl mayhem, it's hilarious to see what looks like two genuinely random (often potatofaced) men being highlighted as ultimate ships, (this, teen wolf, Eddie/Steve from Stranger Things, ect, etc...) when the only thing between them is dartboard dynamics. Hilarious.
